GABRIELA WOMEN’S PARTY “FIGHT NIGHT”

One in four Filipino women experience domestic violence on a daily basis. According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Philippine National Police, 61% of violence against women cases were reported under domestic violence.

The most alarming of all — most neighbors are aware of domestic violence happening in one household, but wouldn’t dare to report to authority to help abused women. This is mostly out of fear and the culture of not dwelling on people's marital problems.

We wished to end this by creating awareness of the reality of domestic abuse, how our lack of action makes us a spectator of the crime, and how we can help in the smallest way possible. We worked with Gabriela Women’s Party, a Filipino organization that advocates for women’s issues that include harassment, sexism, and domestic violence, to address this issue.

In 2017, we came up with two print ads that showcase the nightly scene happening in most Filipino homes — a living room in a boxing ring and a kitchen situated in a boxing and an MMA arena. These print ads are addressed to people who could actually help in stopping domestic abuse by simply reporting to Gabriela hotline, instead of just witnessing and spectating as if it’s a show for them to see and hear.
